It is the act of wrapping wires around posts on circuit boards to create interconnections between cards and/or backplanes of complex machines.
As a prototyping tool, wire wrapping has been circumvented by breadboards, which allow through-hole components and jumper wires to be socketed directly into the board.
Wire wrapping is still used in aircraft electonics and in various military and government applications due to its high reliability. Done correctly, wire wrapping offers greater vibration resistance than soldering, and can be removed in the field with no tools.
