The VESA Driver was always a headache for gamers due to the great amount of conventional memory that this driver engaged.
The terms here are incorrect, UNIVBE was an extension for cheap SVGA cards, which did not support the extended VESA modes in their VGA BIOS. This is not a skill either, but a software patch on an obsolete system. Cards with good VGA bioses did not require patching and thus didn't require any additional memory either.
