There is no “1” key on an old manual typewriter. The numeral “1” is made with a lower-case “l” (letter ell). To make an exclamation point, type an apostrophe, press and hold the backspace key, and type a period. Then release the backspace key. I've forgotten why you had to hold the backspace key. Mom says people were less excitable then because it was so much bother.
