— By drilling a round thin piece of wood into a flat “hearth” with a suitable notch cut out enough friction can be generated to cause combustion of the sawdust created from the hearth, this can the be transferred to tinder to light a fire.

A bow consisting of a bent piece of wood and a piece of string can be used to help spin the drill fast enough to create enough friction

This skill is still used in some parts of the world and is often practised by (boy) scouts
