Put the tape to be edited on the tape machine. Play the tape until the first part of the sound you want removed is played. Rock the reels back and forth across this point to more exactly find the edit point. Mark the tape with a grease pencil at the playback head. Repeat the process at the first sound you want to keep. Pull the tape out and place it in the special groove in the editing block and cut with a razor blade at the marks. Approximate the ends so there is no gap and then put splicing tape over the cut. Remove from the block and reel the tape back in. Play the splice to see how it sounds.
