At one time, almost all drivers had to manually shift their gears. This involved depressing a clutch pedal to temporarily disengage the transmission, allowing the driver to move the stick shift. This movement actually shifted the gears of the vehicle's transmission.
This is far, far from obselete. Most cars have manual transmission. In most parts of the world (with the possible exception of the United States of America), driving an automatic transmission car isn't even considered driving.
