Used to perform initial configuration on a good deal of network devices
This skill is nowhere near obsolete. It is still required for many industrial and machine control devices such as PLCs? and encoders which function over regular RS-232C or RS-485 serial communications channels.
It is also needed in the configuration of any type of serial radio, serial-to-ethernet gateway, repeaters, etc.
Routers, too. –Just finished at a client's place.
