Routing Email By Hand

Field Computers
Went Obsolete early to mid 1990s
Made Obsolete By Centralized DNS
Knowledge Assumed The server names of the machines between your server and the recipient that had an /etc/hosts entry for the next server along the path.
When useful UUCP would technically still function, although nobody uses it

It's the same skill as manually typing in an email address, except the email address was really long and you put exclamation marks in between the various server names along the route. It was the equivalent of addressing letter mail by putting all the steps the mail had to take on the outside of the envelope.
