Some of the best photos of the moon, even up to 2008, were taken using film that was then developed automatically on board the satellite before it was scanned for TV transmission back to Earth, where the image was re-exposed to film for analysis.
There were occasions where artefacts crept into the final photo due to the chemical processing - an example can be found in the photo of the moon near the Apollo 11 landing site.
