Navigate Using ALORAN

The “skill” needed to navigate with an electronic position-determining device is the same whether that device is a LORAN, an INS or a GPS. It's not obsolete, and isn't going to be anytime soon. For that reason, this is a bogus entry.

For the general public, that comment is reasonably correct. However pilots are expected to know a lot more about their equipment. For my old panel-mounted LORAN I had to know its accuracy limits across varying conditions, how and when it could temporarily display bogus info without it being flagged as unusable, and so on. Definitely obsolete information now.

The actual use of LORAN, how it works and plotting a position using the LOP's has been overcome by events. The LOPs? are no longer on nautical charts and the receivers automatically convert to Lats and Longs. With the low cost, repeatability and high accuracy of GPS and DGPS LORAN is fast becoming a thing of the past. Yes, the skill of navigating using LORAN has become obsolete if you are talking about interpolating and plotting using LOPs?.
