Prior to the late 1970s, in the U.S., soda and beer cans were opened by pulling a ring attached to a teardrop shaped flat piece of metal. The teardrop covered the hole from which the beverage was poured. The ring and teardrop-shaped piece of metal was often called a “pop top” or “pull top” and were commonly found as litter. They could be strung together by bending the teardrop through the ring of another pop top, and so on indefinitely. Necklaces, bracelets, or even chainmail could be made in this way.
