In the days of handset type, every letter needed to be placed explicitly on the page. This included adding the appropriate amount of space between the words to justify the text to have an even right margin. Hyphenation of words is essential to be able to get small enough word chunks to fill enough text in the gaps so that not too much space is inserted.
These days, programs such as TeX? (pioneering the modern techniques, dating from the late 1970s, and still being used) and InDesign? (2000s) use optimisation to perform a similar process in a much less tedious manner for the typesetter.
