When useful When you only have your fingers

A trencher was a piece of bread used as a plate. It was the common way to hold your food while dining during the Middle Ages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trencher_(tableware)

After the Middle Ages, people increasingly began to use forks and plates instead of trenchers and fingers. If anyone has ever told you not to eat with your fingers then it is most certain that they were not from the Middle Ages.
