Unadventours Women and Push Up Bras are the cause of the decline in coresetting.
This skill was made “obsolete” by proof of Spinal Damage with Whale Boning
The corset was well used for it's ability to shape and resize the human form without surgical procedures.
Knowing how to lace with ribbon into repitive rows of holes and the common sense when to stop tightening for fear of loss of circulation or breathing abilities is also helpful knowledage.
The corset has been used throuhgout history to alter the appearance of a shape of a woman to enable said woman to fit into smaller garmaents as dictated by society. This is not strictly true: corsets and stays alter the body's shape, yes, but it wasn't until the mid- to late-19th century that they were used to make the waistline smaller. Earlier eras used them for support and smoothing.
In all honesty, I use this skill on a weekly basis. I own a numbers of corsets, some with traditional whale bonding, some with platsic in the seams. This is not an obsolte skill by any means because there is a whole sub culture of pinup revival in the 'Gothic' or 'Punk' movements beginning from the late 1970s and continuing throught the present time. And on a side note, I love my corsets.
