Centering Text On A Typewriter

It was necessary to take the paper being typed on and line it up perfectly in conjunction with the bar with the capstan wheels. Then, you needed to count how many letters were in your title, divide by two and then count the carriage over by the quotient. That lined you up.

The fast way: Set a tab stop at the exact center of the page. Mentally spell the title, including spaces, and press Backspace for every other letter or space. Then type the title.
